What is
Hymenoplasty?

The hymen is a thin membrane of tissue, typically in the shape of a crescent, that partially surrounds the bottom of the external opening of the vagina. In some women, the hymen only partially covers the opening, while in others, it almost completely obscures the opening. Some women are even born with no hymen at all. Contrary to popular belief, the hymen does not “break” or “tear,” but is merely stretched by everyday activities including, but not limited to tampon use, walking, and yes, sexual intercourse.

However, because women in some cultures believe an intact hymen to be a sign of virtue, many of them seek out hymenoplasty to restore the hymen to its original state. Other women have this procedure simply for personal reasons, to enhance their intimate area, sometimes with other procedures such as labiaplasty or vaginal tightening.

Hymenoplasty can be a sensitive subject for many women. Rest assured that the TCC staff respects and strives to protect your privacy, and keeps all details of this—and any procedure you have at our clinic—strictly confidential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Have
Hymenoplasty?

Sexual intercourse is the most common activity that causes the hymen to stretch. However, it may also be stretched due to other activities not related to sexual activity including, but not limited to tampon use, falling on a sharp object, or falling while waterskiing. Hymenoplasty is the only procedure that will restore the hymen to its original state.

Some women feel that restoring their hymen also restores their virginity, or at least the appearance of it. The hymen can be altered by activities other than sexual intercourse, but some women may feel an intact hymen is necessary prior to marriage, either for cultural, religious, or personal reasons. Some women may also explore the option of hymenoplasty as a “gift” to their partner, even after several years of marriage.

Regardless of the reason, having a hymenoplasty is a very personal choice. Our experienced gynecological surgeon, as well as our clinic staff, will do everything possible to ensure your comfort and peace of mind.

Cost of
Hymenoplasty?

At TCC, hymen repair costs $2,800 plus tax. It does not usually require general anesthesia, but if you need it, the cost will increase by $1,000. Adding another procedure such as vaginoplasty or labiaplasty will also increase the overall cost, but will cost less than having each procedure individually.

How is Hymenoplasty
Performed?

The first step is to schedule a consultation so we may discuss your options with you. During the consultation, we'll provide you with information about the hymen, complete instructions on how to prepare for your hymenoplasty, and details about what to expect during and after the surgery. After the consultation has been completed, a date for the procedure will be set.

Dr. Dimitrios Giannoulias, MD, FRCS(C), FSOG(C)

Your hymenoplasty will be performed by our gynecological surgeon and clinic director, Dr. Dimitrios Giannoulias. He specializes not only in hymen repair, but other cosmetic procedures that enhance the female genitalia.

During the procedure, Dr. Giannoulias will suture the edges of the hymen tissue together, without completely obscuring the vaginal opening. After suturing, the hymen tissue will grow together as it heals. You may also experience some vaginal tightening as a result of the hymenoplasty.

After the surgery, you will be in the recovery room for up to one hour, where you will monitored by the nurses, and then you'll be able to go home once the doctor has cleared you.

Hymenoplasty Risks and Recovery

Hymenoplasty is a safe procedure that presents few risks. You should expect some discomfort, swelling, and a little bleeding for a few days following the surgery. Dr. Giannoulias will prescribe pain medication to help alleviate discomfort, as well as a topical antibiotic to ward off infection.

While recovering, sitting in Epsom salt baths two or three times a week will promote faster healing, and will be very soothing. You'll need to avoid swimming, using tampons, and wearing thong underwear for at least a couple of weeks after surgery. You'll also need to abstain from sexual intercourse for at least four weeks after the procedure.

You should be able to return to work the day after surgery, but full recovery can take up to six weeks.

Your first follow-up will be scheduled two to three weeks after the surgery.
